Oil
City has approximately 64 miles of paved streets and about 12
miles of unpaved streets in an area of 4.33 square miles to
maintain year around. Paving, grading, patching, milling, and
sealing are scheduled projects throughout the year. Street sweeping
is started in the early spring and continued into the late fall.
Storm clean up is a major part of street maintenance. Removal
of fallen trees, limbs, and dirt from City streets is the responsibility
of the Street and Parks Department. In the middle of the fall
months, for approximately six weeks this department has leaf
removal from all streets in the City. A schedule is sent weekly
to the local paper so citizens will know when crews will be
cleaning each area. Snow removal, plowing and spreading anti-skid
material, is done twenty-four hours a day starting in January.
Three crews work around the clock so we are prepared for snowstorms
and continue into the early spring when once again street sweeping
starts.
The
cleaning, repair and new construction of seventy-three miles
of one hundred year old pipe for sanitary and storm sewers
is a year around project. Backups, broken pipes, and dirt
and debris in catch basins occur regularly.
The
repainting of crosswalks and other street markings is done
every year. The Street Department replaces street signs and
posts when damaged or stolen. The Street Department also replaces
parking meter posts when they are damaged.
Remodeling,
repairs, painting, plumbing, and electrical maintenance on
all City structures such as: city hall, the garages, parking
ramp, fountain, city steps, and bathrooms at all parks and
the marina are done by the Street and Parks Department.
Two
mechanics do both parts and service management of the city
garage. Maintenance, inspections, and the cleaning of each
department's vehicles and equipment are done by the mechanics.
They maintain the approximately 54 city owned vehicles.
One
hundred thirty eight acres of grounds are maintained from
May to October. Mowing, planting, trimming, and brush hogging
are done at Hasson, Mitchell, Justus Park, the Marina, Oil
City Garden Club projects, railroad track right-of-ways, and
many downtown and residential areas. This work could not be
completed without the help of youth hired part time by the
City as Summer Help. Each summer the pavilions at Hasson Park
are booked for various groups, reunions, receptions, and other
meetings.
